Harmony Festival History

In 1972 a local artist and art instructor, along with his wife, Joan, started the first craft show on
the Alcona County Courthouse lawn with about 5 craft vendors. This was the beginning of the
Harmony Weekend Arts and Craft Show being held on Labor Day Weekend ever since.
Harmony Weekend name came about because of the combination of Barbershop Harmony and
the Arts and Crafts show. The Barbershop Harmony participants started gathering in 1962.
There is still some participation in the weekend featured on “Harmony on the Hill” during the
Art and Crafts Show.
In 1974 with the show rapidly growing the Harrisville Arts Council was incorporated, voting in
Hartman as president and lasting 20+ years. The show grew tremendously over the years with
some years reaching participation of up to 500 booths.
Harrisville Arts Council committee has seen a variety of members throughout the years but
continues to keep this show successful.
Combination of Barbershop Harmony and Arts and Craft Show has put this small community on
the map to this day.
Weekend name changed 3 years ago to Harmony Festival.

This year, 2024, commemorates the 50 th Year Anniversary.
Show hours are Saturday from 9am-5pm. Sunday 9am-4pm.
“Harmony on the Hill” within the craft show grounds from 10am-4pm both days.

This year marks the 50 th Anniversary of the show. Looking forward to many more.
